Wedding Wednesdays: The Story Behind the Inner Envelope

Since my life now revolves around wedding planning, I've decided to make a feature on the blog called "Wedding Wednesdays" where I will cover everything wedding-related from choosing a color palette to what to look for in a potential wedding planner.

When researching save-the-dates and wedding invitations, I recently learned the purpose of the inner envelope that encloses the actual invitation and reply card.

Before the post office came about, wedding invitations were hand-delivered by footmen. Because the footman's job was a rough and dirty one, his hands were often dirty and greasy, which would then rub off on the envelope he was holding. To avoid having an honored guest receive a soiled envelope, invitations were delivered in two envelopes. The dirty envelope would be thrown away and the fresh and clean second envelope would be presented to the guest.

See, now you know! Go out and share that fun fact with someone and have a Happy Wednesday!
